I’ve been to Grand Con, Washingcon, Portal Con, Origins, UK Games Expo and even SPIEL, but I had never been to Gen Con, so when the opportunity presented itself to go, I was all in! Similar to a bunch of other people, I used the Tabletop Together Tool to plan out all of the games I was interested in even a slightest bit.
Going to any convention requires some planning and preparations, and UK Games Expo 2018 was no different. In addition to all the things you normally do when you travel somewhere (pack clothes, money, passport, book flight and hotel) I always spend a lot time reading up on games.
The board game highlight of my year is without a doubt SPIEL. It always takes place in October, in Essen Germany. This year was my 4th time there, and I was just as excited (if not even more) than first 3 times I went there. So sit back and let me tell you how SPIEL ‘17 was for me.
I admit it, I love UK Games Expo. It’s almost right between the Essen SPIEL fairs, and has a completely different feel to it. It focuses a lot more on prototypes, seminars and gaming in general. I was happy to be going for the second time this year and I had a blast. So what did I do there, you might ask? What was my favourite game? And what games did I get my hands on? Well keep on reading and you might just find an answer to all those questions.
It’s a sad time. Essen SPIEL ’16 is all over. Luckily I brought home so many games that I’ll keep me entertained for a long time. Too many games some might say. But can you ever really have to many games? It did mean I had to sell a lot of old games to make room, but it was all worth it.
A lot of great games are coming out at Essen SPIEL ’16. Almost too many great games. I wish I could grab them all, but money (and room) gets in the way of such foolish dreams. I’ve made list after list to narrow the field of games down, but only partially succeeded. I do however have some clear favorites.
Essen SPIEL has been the highlight of my year for a while now. It’s a fantastic experience. Meeting so many great people. Playing so many great games. Spending way to much buying them. It’s an experience I would not be without and I can’t see myself not going again, again and again.
Targi is a fantastic game. One of the best 2 player games out there. If you don’t believe me you should check out our review of it. Now, after many years of waiting patiently, we finally get an expansion for it. Targi: Die Erweiterung is designed by Andy Steiger who has been super kind to give me an exclusive interview about it.
UK Games Expo 2016 was the first boardgame convention outside of Essen Spiel I had the pleasure of attending. And what a great experience it was. It’s very different in both size and feel compared to Essen Spiel. It’s not as big and there is much more focus on playing games and great seminars. I’ll be back again next year for sure.
Essen SPIEL ’15 is over now. 4 days of glorious madness has ended. So many games have been played and so many games have been bought. It has been a wonderful ride, but now the only thing that remains is to find … Continued
